Pernah dengar istilah seperti di atas? Kalau tidak familiar, mungkin Anda familiar dengan istilah plin-plan atau mencla-mencle. Ada sebagian orang yang berprinsip bahwa menjilat ludah sendiri adalah hal yang memalukan, rendahan, tak lebih terhormat daripada kotoran kuda. Sabda Pandita Ratu, katanya, kalau kita sudah sudah bersabda layaknya seorang raja tak akan kita tarik kembali kata-kata itu. Kalau Anda melanggar konon katanya Anda bakal dianggap penjilat dan pencari muka. Bagaimana menurut Anda? Baik atau tidakkah prinsip seperti itu? Sayangnya saya tak sependapat sepenuhnya.
Terserah kalau Anda menganggap prinsip seperti itu setia pada komitmen atau semacamnya. Untuk kasus tertentu mungkin Anda benar. Tapi di sisi lain dan di banyak hal lain Anda salah. Saya ambil contoh, bila seseorang mengatakan , "68% pengguna friendster adalah palsu" di suatu acara pada sebuah televisi ternama. Kemudian, orang lain dengan telak mengatakan dengan berdasar fakta bahwa admin friendster pun tidak tahu bahwa 68% pengguna layanannya palsu. Apa si pembuat pernyataan harus tetap keukeuh dengan pernyataan itu? bagi saya, mengakui kesalahan dan meralat pernyataan jauh lebih satria dibanding melakukan hal bodoh buat mempertahankan pendapat tersebut.
Itu baru saya contohkan satu kasus yang real dan benar-benar terjadi. Masalahnya, kali ini si pemegang prinsip ini bikin kasus yang benar-benar mengesalkan. Sampai membuat ibu saya tempramen dan jatuh sakit. Begini ceritanya, ibu saya adalah seorang guru bimbingan dan konseling yang turut menentukan penjurusan murid di sekolahnya. IPA, IPS, atau bahasa. Nah, ada kasus di mana beberapa orang murid yang sebenarnya lebih berminat masuk IPS, dan nilainya mencukupi tapi oleh kepala sekolah dengan arogannya dimasukkan ke kelas Bahasa.
Terus, ibu saya menjelaskan kalau siswa-siswa tersebut secara psikis bakal kurang maksimal kalau ditempatkan di kelas Bahasa. Terlebih lagi nilainya mencukupi, jelas membuktikan kalau para siswa tersebut benar-benar belajar sungguh agar bisa ditempatkan di jurusan pilihannya. Terus dengan ditambah argumen bahwa para siswa SMA dipersiapkan untuk melanjutkan ke perguruan tinggi, sementara ilmu kebahasaan dikelompokkan ke jurusan IPS yang tes masuknya meliputi Geografi, Sejarah, dan Ekonomi. Mata pelajaran yang tidak bakal diberikan di jurusan bahasa.
Akhirnya bapak kepala sekolah ini menyerah dengan argumen ibu saya. Tapi, kok tega-teganya tetep keukeuh dengan keputusannya memasukkan siswa-siswa itu ke jurusan bahasa. "Kita lihat saja nanti" katanya. Jadilah emosi ibu saya dibawa ke rumah dan saya pun kena getahnya 
. Pak, mbok ya nggak usah gengsi mengakui kekalahan lah. Jilatlah ludah anda lagi bila yang anda ludahi memintanya. Hanya orang bodoh yang tidak mau mengubah "salah" menjadi "benar".

Padahal wibawa tidak selamanya diukur oleh “kekeukeuhan” si orang, tetapi diukur pada manghormati dan mendengarkan pendapat orang serta dan kalau memang pendapat orang itu benar ia bisa menerimanya bahkan ia dapat lebih memperbaikinya lagi.
Jikalau seseorang tetap “keukeuh” tapi ngawur maka nanti kalau ia jatuh, wibawanya akan lebih jatuh lagi……

Padahal kalau yang masuk jurusan IPA dengan sukarela pindah ke jurusan IPS atau bahasa, sekolah tak mempermasalahkan ya? Jurusan bahasa, jika anaknya tak menyenangi akan tersiksa… sebetulnya penjurusan di SMA tak sekedar dilihat dari nilai, tapi harus ada test bakatnya. Saya ingat, anakku saat di SMA diadakan test bakat, sehingga selain nilai prestasi, juga dilihat dari hasil test psikologinya. Paling tidak ada dua variabel yang dinilai…
